Lord of the Reads

I finished listening to the unabridged audiobook of Lord of the Rings yesterday, which I'd been listening to on my iPod when I walked to and from work. It's the 1990 recording in which British actor Rob Inglis reads the text. He took some warming up to but mostly I think he's terrific. He sounds near enough to JRR Tolkien himself that, when I started listening before I knew who it was, I wondered if he was Christopher Tolkien.

Inglis does a surprisingly good job coming up with melodies for some of Tolkien's songs, too.

He's also good at coming up with different voices to distinguish among characters. His voices for the orcs were so much like those in the Peter Jackson movies I wondered if he was an influence.

I don't have any new insight into Lord of the Rings I want to share except to say it is a perfect book to listen to on long, compulsory journeys on foot.

Here's a poem of my own:

X Sonnet 1952

Horizon dots resolve to penguin ranks.
How strange to be bereft in snowy parts.
The ducks could muster guns and icy tanks.
But souls of land must hide their thoughtful hearts.
Away, advised the Beatle, love must hide.
Amidst the freezing space, remain detached.
For every sign and post behind you lied.
And no bernard with brandy's yet dispatched.
And yet a hope arises swift from Thor.
For lightning gods would not abandon clouds.
So waiting eyes would watch the busy shore.
And pierce the falsely lost and milling crowd.
So hold the line and sharpen shining spear.
An angel now is holding Satan's beer.

Escape Artist

The doggos pulled the sheets off of the bed. Also, there’s a small hole in them. Sigh. This is why we can’t have nice things.

Overslept my alarm to 6:30 AM. I don’t have food for lunch. Maybe I could make some soup (done).

I decided to go back to sleep for an hour after taking the dogs out. I set up my new alarm clock, so maybe that will help get me up? It did.

I emailed my therapist because there is someone at work with they/them pronouns, whom I accidentally referred to as "her". (Not to their face, thank goodness!) I asked for tips on how to remember their pronouns, although I put a post-it note on my computer. She said that she thought that the post-it note was a good idea, but that I probably will slip up, apologize, and use the right pronoun.

I've decided not to make the Basil Tomato Corn Bake. I have pizza for dinner, so I just need something for lunch tomorrow (my BistroMD order should come tomorrow), so I'll pop over to the local grocery store and pick up a Lean Cuisine.

I joined an online Web site called BookBrowse. They offer reviews of the best fiction and non-fiction books. I found a non-fiction book about a writer and a cat that I bought.

It's almost the end of work and that means feeding time at the zoo. (And it is a zoo!) Oliver got into my face: "Hi! Remember me! I'm hungry!" I promised to feed him. They’re going to get fed late though because I want to make and eat my pizza first. (I eat first because I take the dogs out after I feed them.)

I read an article in the New York Times about a plus-size influencer who founded a company called MegaBabe. She sells anti-chafing thigh cream and boob powder (and a bunch of other stuff). I thought that they would be good for Sardinia, so I ordered them.

Someone chewed Gracie’s supposedly chew-proof collar. Bella had a piece of it, but I don’t know if she chewed it off. Sigh. So I ordered a new one. Actually, I should order two. I have a spare collar though. No, I don’t see it. I need to get the pet junk drawer better organized. I ordered some drawer organizers. We’ll see how they work. Expensive though.

The pizza was good: California Pizza Kitchen Margherita pizza. I love Margherita pizza. And there are leftovers for tomorrow. Now I’ve started the pet feeding process.

Well, Gracie can indeed get out of the yard. She pulled her leash out of my hand and ran over to some people across the street. Bella got out when I was trying to get Gracie back in, but she at least came back in. My heart is racing. I ordered chicken wire, a staple gun, and staples from Home Depot for delivery tomorrow.

I looked into electronics recycling because I have an old monitor and TV to get rid of. They are having a recycling day in September. I need to remember to register. They also will take lawn mower batteries, so I can get rid of the old ones that don’t work.

I got my stoneware from Costco. The ones from Macy’s supposedly was delivered on last Friday, but I don’t see it anywhere. Did someone take it? Hell. No, okay, the ones that I got today are the Macy’s ones. I got the Costco silverware. The Costco stoneware is scheduled to arrive on Tuesday. Whew. I’ve never had a problem with porch pirates, but it could have been the first time.

I’m sweaty and beat. But I’m wide awake. I need to cool off. I guess that I’ll clean off the kitchen table. I want to order new chairs for the kitchen table (I put my knee through one of the cane ones), but I want to wait until the kitchen is clean. I can look though. Okay, I found chairs that I like. I didn’t want upholstered chairs because cats. But I found some nice wooden ones on Wayfair.

I ordered Lean Cuisine from Walmart because I also needed soda. I paid for express delivery tonight (received).

I ordered a Doggie Lawn, which is a patch of real grass that you can put indoors to help potty train Gracie.

I'm looking at glassware on Costco because I broke a few glasses. (Well, I left some out and Bella broke them. I'm lucky that she didn't cut herself.) But I think that I should wait until I see what stoneware I decide to keep.

I'm going to start the nighttime feeding process and go to bed soon. I'd like to get up at a decent hour to get outside. Though they're saying scattered thunderstorms tomorrow, so I'll have to play it by ear.

I managed to grow some pioppini mushrooms!

I mean, sure, only five in the first flush, but that's still cool since they're a tough variety to grow.

Cohousing

The Guardian had an article about cohousing developments, developments that have separate units but also a communal house. Many of them are intentionally multigenerational. That intrigues me. Madison has a few of them. So does Asheville. Portland (Oregon) and Seattle seem to be the nexus of them (not surprised). There is one in Bloomington, IL.

Facebook has its uses. I read a post about Grazia Deledda, a writer from Sardinia who won the Nobel Prize for literature. I’ll read her books on my trip.

Woke up at 7 AM. It’s a dark and rainy day, so I decided to go back to sleep for a little while and take my shower at lunchtime. I overslept work by a half-hour, sigh.

I'm caught up on my project for work. So, yay.

Bella and Gracie were cracking me up. I let Gracie run around the back yard with her leash trailing behind her so that I can grab her if she moves into the front yard, where there's a gap in the fence. She and Bella were playing tug-of-war with the leash. I need to get another leash to use when I actually take her somewhere because this one is getting grotty.

Had my therapy appointment. My therapist was glad that I’m going to take better care of myself. I vented about work to her. She said that I was doing everything that I could do to manage the work situation.

I’m feeling exhausted and am having digestive issues. I think that I’ll go to bed early (really, Adrienne, do so) and get up early to go to the store.

Fed us all and took the dogs out. My joints are aching. I'm going to bed. And it's still light out!

Ally McLGBTQ with Cheese

The series momentum seems to slow and almost stop completely in season four of Ally McBeal. The Robert Downey Jr. character has so little going on that it makes the whole show feel inert. It makes me notice some problems that really had been cropping up even early.

I read a criticism that Ally herself isn't shown to be a competent lawyer. I didn't understand that criticism in the first couple seasons but I see it now. Since some time in the middle of the third season it's rare to see any character other than John, Mark, and now Larry (Robert Downey Jr.'s character) actually try a case. Not just Ally but all the female characters are always in support positions.

I have slightly more complicated feelings about the show's increased focus on LGBTQ characters and issues. It's a bit off-putting when Ally rejects a guy entirely because he's bisexual but she does acknowledge it is her own irrational bias. It's work remembering this show was made twenty-five years ago. Of course I've seen people call for certain episodes to be removed from Disney+ but I'd say these are useful reminders of just how much society has changed in the last twenty-five years. Progressives have a tendency to pretend the right sort of people never at any point in history ever had the wrong sort of opinion. It's ironic for those called "progressive" not to what to mark progress or make an effort to understand it through observation.

Season four has a trans character named Cindy, a trans woman played by cisgender actress Lisa Edelstein. I can see arguments for both sides of the issue of whether cis actors should play trans characters. It may help the viewer see the trans character in a way that agrees with that character's self-perception. But I tend to feel any useful narrative on the trans experience would include the anxiety the trans person may feel at being able to "pass".

There is something ironic about "trans-visibility" in that many trans people for a long time wished not to be seen as trans but as simply men and women. The trans people who tend to show up in supporting roles on Disney and Netflix shows now seem like they might be more accurately called "gender fluid" and many do self-describe that way.

Mark, like Larry, often seem like a pointless character. I really had no idea why he was introduced except maybe to fill Billy's role in scripts that had already been written. His relationship with Cindy is the first time he seemed to serve any particular function.

The best part of the episode I watched last night, "Love on Holiday" from December 4, 2000 is the subplot about Nelle who auctions herself off for a date. The winner ends up being a guy about to be sentenced for life in prison for euthanasia. This was a nice meeting of an intellectual moral quandary with a short tragic romance plot.

Crud. I forgot Gracie’s spay appointment today. The vet did not send me a reminder though. I got it rescheduled and now it’s on my calendar. I was wondering about it when I got up and looked for a reminder but didn’t see one. Gracie is also due for booster shots, but they’ll do them at the same time as the spay.

I finally got the data that I need for my project, so I'm jamming on it. Done!

It started raining at 4:00 PM and will rain for a few hours, so I won't make it to the post office. I'll try again to get up early tomorrow. (I didn't get up early today. Right now, I want a nap, but I perk up later in the day. Night owl.) Wow, the rain is coming down in buckets.

Maybe I'll take a short nap right after work. I'll need for the rain to stop before bringing out the recycling. Well, the rain is supposed to stop at 5:30, so I can mail the package (Done! Go me!)

Fed us all. Opened up my Amazon boxes. Now I’m cooling off, and then I’ll get the recycling. It should go fast because I’m not going to put the boxes out because the ground is wet. (Done.)

I got my book about Molokai. I’ll look at it before bed.

I’m dripping sweat, so I’m cooling off before I treat Zara’s ears. (Done. She is pissed off.)

After I post, I'll feed the critters and go to bed.

Killer Recreation

Sigourney Weaver and Holly Hunter have to stop a serial killer imitating other, famous killers in 1995's Copycat. This isn't one for plumbing the psychological depths of criminality or law enforcement but it is a fun procedural.

Weaver plays Helen Hudsen, a criminal psychologist who's attacked by a killer after she gives a lecture on killers. She survives but is afflicted by agoraphobia and chronic panic attacks.

Holly Hunter plays MJ who, along with her partner played by Dermot Mulroney, is on the trail of the copycat killer. After Helen makes an anonymous phone call to give the police some clues, they track her down and enlist her reluctant aid.

Of course, her being agoraphobic means that somehow the killer manages to infiltrate her expensive apartment multiple times. This is one of those killers who seems to be just a little bit supernatural. It seemed the filmmakers had to keep up an even pace of Helen being terrorised. The guy manages to hack into her computer for some of the most astonishingly dated computer suspense drama I've ever seen. After the killer sends Helen an evil AVI file, Mulroney asks her if there's any way they can watch the video again. Helen says, yes, she put it "on tape". But then the killer somehow erased her tape! Maybe she ought to've locked it in the safe.

There are some other problems with details. When the killer imitates the Hillside Stranglers by dumping a woman's body containing semen from two perpetrators, the cops never even discuss the possibility of the killer having an accomplice or even wonder at all whom the other semen might have come from.

Weaver and Hunter both give good performances, of course, and director Jon Amiel keeps up a good pace.

Copycat is available on The Criterion Channel.

Finished reading:

Faithful Unto Death: Pet cemeteries, animal graves, and eternal devotion by Paul Koudounaris (Author) - This book made me cry like 4 times. It was really sweet.

Currently reading:

The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood - I sort of avoided this book because it became ~too popular~ but now that we're fucking around and finding out, I've wanted to read the prophetic dystopian literature that is somehow likely my future. Except that I'm starting perimenopause, ofc.

Moby Dick by Herman Melville - More whale lore.

Good Strategy Bad Strategy: The Difference and Why It Matters by Richard Rumelt (Author) - So, as you could likely guess, this is a book for work. Its OK, i guess, but its a little dated and I am pretty certain the author and I are on very different sides of the political compass.

Listening:

Tetsu Inoue - Ambiant Otaku. I got this album from a playlist of ambient/noise [personal profile] symbioid sent me and this really stuck out.

Five Iron Frenzy - Zen and the Art of Xenophobia. The 4th of July got me in the mood for this song, and its just so fucking good. Engine of a Million Plots is probably my least favorite five iron album, but this song fucks. Also: Abraham Lincoln Wolverine. Content warning: ska.

Unanswered Hymns by CHRCH. Andres sent me this heavy doom metal album and Ive dug it.

Lo Que Extrañas Ya No Existe by Lame. Its just punk rock, but I like it. And punk I like is getting rarer these days, which is really weird.

Submersus by Hell. Hell's new album is heavy and good. Heavy doom metal. I had heard a preview track from Andres and I'm excited the whole album is out now. Might make the album list this year tbh!

Clube da Mariposa Mórbida by Akira Umeda & Metal Preyers. The future of ambient music is Black and apparently from Brasil.

Watching:

Still AEW! Wrestling is good!!

Clara and I started watching scavengers reign. There's only 4 episodes left, and I'm excited to finish it. I love how absolutely lived in the alien planet is. Everything is phenomenally hostile, but also everything just wants to survive. Still, there's a reason why parasitic shit is absolutely unnerving at a deep level.

Clara and I saw Pee-wee as himself. I think I wrote about it last week, but I definitely think he was an amazing creative genius that I would have loved to have seen thrive if he had only been born in, say, the 70s or something.

Playing:

Deltarune! I know I play video games p slow these days, but I don't care. I think I'm near the end of Chapter 3.

Halfway Through July

The farmer's market closes at 6 PM. I work until 5:30. That's not going to work. I'm going to try the Harvest Market grocery store in Champaign tomorrow. They make deals with local farmers, so maybe their produce is more fresh?

Overslept a little and got up at 7 AM. Now I'm at work, and Oliver and Lily are wrestling with each other. Gracie is pretty good upstairs and lies quietly.

Yikes. It's halfway through July. Where does the time go?

One of the perils of working from home is cats on my keyboard. One of my cats sent messages to the IT guy with whom I was working. He thought that it was funny.

My mercury retrograde story: we had a big-deal meeting with the people from our libraries on our committees. So, of course, the Zoom link didn’t work, and we started late because of it. Then, when we were in the meeting, it kept on showing the presenter’s view of the slides. Finally someone else did the slides, so it was okay. I volunteered to post the recording, so I hope that I won’t get caught in the technical glitches.

Cool. My recipe calls for whole wheat bread crumbs, but I've never been able to find any. Amazon has them. They were eligible for overnight shipping if you order $25 worth of stuff, plus I had some USBA plugs in my cart, so I went looking for something else to order and found pumpkin chews for dogs that are supposed to help with diarrhea and other digestive problems, which would be good for Gracie. Overnight shipping! I'll get my ingredients tonight and make the Basil Tomato Corn Bake tomorrow night. (I already checked on pans and mixing bowls.) Now I'm second-guessing ordering BistroMD instead of cooking, but I don't need to add regular cooking to my list of to-dos.

After reading [personal profile] dadi's post about her bruising from the implants (I asked my dentist about it, and he said that there shouldn't be any. I'm not sure that I believe him.), I ordered two small bottles of Estee Lauder concealer to take to Sardinia with me. [personal profile] dadi said that the bruising was from sinus work though, but a friend of mine had some bruising from an implant. Oh! I need to check whether I have enough reef-safe sunscreen!

It looks like it's raining a little. I wish that it would pour because it's been so humid. I was coated with sweat when I was out with the dogs a little while ago. 82% humidity. Ick.

Hmm. I was wondering if I should work with a personal trainer at the YMCA to get me to exercise. It's not horribly expensive. Exercise would help my energy levels too. I'd have to start with a "wellness consultation".

Hmm. It's predicted to storm right when I have to go mail my return. The post office opens at 8 AM, so if I could get going early, I could go then. There's a big honking rain cell over Urbana right now. Yeah, I'll do that. It stopped raining, but I should have left already if I was going tonight. I’ll go tomorrow morning.

I bought a carpet cleaner for upstairs. Gracie has peed there a couple of times. The cats have missed the litter box a few times. It would be easier to be able to control the cleaning.

Fed us all. Bella and Gracie chased each other all over the yard despite the heat. Now they’re tired. Adopting Gracie was a great idea. They keep each other amused much of the time.

Oliver was on my lap, and I thought, “Aww. He wants to cuddle.” Then he knocked down my glasses and my phone. Much less cute :)

Got the garbage out. I’m cooling for a few minutes, and then I’ll get packages off of the porch. I couldn’t have gone to the grocery store tonight anyway. If I get up extremely early, I could go in the morning, but it’s doubtful because it’s a 15 minute drive each way.

I bought a six-pack of Sterlite containers for my emergency supplies and camping supplies.

I took my meds early in the hope that I'll go to sleep early.

The last two days proved that professional writing can be as rough as answering phones.

I expected that, sure, but it's one thing to expect and another to experience. Still wouldn't trade it for an old phone job. Even early Nintendo phone job. And maybe, just maybe, it's good. :)

The Fires of X

I barely remember these episodes of The X-Files I've been watching recently. Some I don't remember at all. I don't know why I never felt like revisiting the series before but I'm kind of glad I kept it fresh for myself. Last night I watched "Fire", an episode from December 1993. I feel like the writing rapidly improved in the first season. There's nothing really silly in this one like the naked lady episode or the evil computer episode.

This one starts out in England where a gardener with the ability to start fires with his mind kills a friendly aristocrat stereotype.

Let that be a lesson; always have a duck pond on your grounds.

The action moves to Washington D.C. and Boston but, of course, it was all shot, as usual, in Vancouver. I kind of like that, though. It's like an alternate universe where the whole world is perpetually under an overcast sky and everyone has to wear overcoats all the time. That sure sounds like paradise in the middle of another sopping humid summer.

We learn a little about Mulder's past at Oxford in which he fell for a girl who's now a Scotland Yard inspector visiting the U.S. on the trail of the arsonist. Again, I have to applaud the show for making Mulder and Scully so extraordinarily professional that Scully shows not a trace of jealousy.

She's catty about it but not in a way that suggests she feels any ownership of Mulder. It's like the gentle ribbing you'd expect from a male colleague.

Last week came the news that X-Files series composer Mark Snow died. He composed that famous whistling theme that persists in the cultural landscape. I even heard it on Japanese TV recently. It's simple and effective.

The X-Files is on Disney+.

Dental Mishap

days_unfolding: (Default)

Woke up at 6:30 AM and took the dogs out. Went back to sleep for a half-hour. I'm nice and shiny clean.

Okay, I did something a little crazy. I had a favorite stoneware set at Macy's, which I ordered (not the really expensive one) and one at Costco that I liked. So I ordered both, and I'll keep the one that I like best and return the other one.

Well, crud. I had a front tooth crack while I was eating and come out. I have an appointment this afternoon at the dentist to look at it.

I’ve been going back and forth with my primary doctor and my psychiatrist about my fatigue. The primary doctor is out until the end of October. The psychiatrist asked me if I had sleep apnea, and I told her, “Yes, I had gotten a CPAP right around the time that my mom died but couldn’t cope at the time,” and she made a referral to a sleep clinic. Have I said lately that I love my psychiatrist? She also lectured me about how what I eat can have an effect, and I ordered BistroMD as the healthiest stuff that I can eat without cooking. I think that I want to make some Tomato Corn Basil Bake in the meantime. If I get my act together, I could go to the Champaign Farmers’ Market tomorrow night for tomatoes and zucchini (and I think that there’s onions?) (I think that I want to use frozen corn because it’s easier.) I have a basil plant in my backyard. I can work on the kitchen and bathroom while the thing is baking. It’s fairly easy to make.

The dentist recommended an implant. They did a scan of my teeth, and they will put in the implant in 2.5 to 3 weeks. They will put in a temporary tooth called a “flipper” at that time. They know about my trip in the middle of August. Meanwhile, I’m short a tooth. Sigh. Apparently my insurance company is fighting paying for my bridge that was previously put in because one of the teeth was extracted with different insurance. They’re arguing with them.

Now I know why the pets run out of water so quickly; Gracie plays in the water dish and spills it. Not sure how I can get her to stop doing it, but at least it isn’t someone drinking a ton of water. I need to put a separate water dish on the counter for the cats that won’t get spilled by Gracie.

Cool. I got my other lantern. And my MREs (“Meals Ready to Eat,” developed by the US Army. They can be stored at room temperature and have their own special heater.) I had to buy a set, so I don’t know what I got. Hmm, I need to stash some silverware to use. I’m thinking of replacing my silverware too because I’m low on forks (I have no idea where they went), so I can snag some of my current silverware.

Fed us all. Gracie kept on barking at a neighbor (and her barks are piercing), so I dropped the leash and let her and Bella run around the backyard. It worked; she quieted down. It’s in the front yard that I have to worry about her getting out.

Okay, I ordered silverware from Costco.

I read an article about retirees who are into video games. I’m not a gamer. My game time ended with text-adventure games, which shows how long ago THAT was. I asked ChatGPT for some recommendations for someone who likes text adventure games, and it recommended “80 Days,” which is a steampunk version of Around the World in 80 Days. That sounds like fun. It has a few other recommendations that sound interesting. But I’m reluctant to get into any of them because I don’t need a distraction right now.

Not sure what to do now. I should start bringing stuff down into the basement, but it’ll be easier after I get the garbage out tomorrow. I’m feeling tired. I could try on some clothes to figure out what dresses to bring to Sardinia. Oh, I need to package up the duvet cover to return tomorrow.

I was wondering if I should get a crate for Gracie, but she likes my bed and doesn’t usually have accidents in the bedroom. But I should have a crate in the basement for my power failure stash because Zara would not like interacting with the other critters. Maybe a collapsible crate? I wishlisted one on Amazon, but need to check if Gracie could fit in there if needs be.

I think that I will just go to bed and do some stuff in the morning.

After telling the blood donation people that of course I would do no serious physical activity today (I lied: I went home and promptly started hauling mulch, painting, and digging up bamboo), I asked myself why do I do this to myself?

The answer is tragically simple: because I come from a family that did not let me have limits.

A day or two after I got my wisdom teeth out as a teenager, my mother insisted that we go to a scenic town with lots of cute little shops (and lots of walking). I stayed passed out in the car in a Vicodin haze. She left me there for several hours to go shopping.

Another time, this time in my early twenties, I passed out while we were at a museum. She left me on a bench in the lobby and walked the whole thing. Once she was done, she dragged me to go see a specific exhibit, then tried to take me to another museum (thankfully it was closed for renovations).

Then there was the time she made me hike six miles (this happened in September... in Florida) when I was sick and hadn't eaten properly in weeks. In fact, the only things I'd had in the prior forty eight hours were half a muffin and a cup of hot cocoa. As a bonus, the reason she took me on this trip was ostensibly to help me get better.

Sleepy Heat

Three older men who spend the lazy summer days lounging at a lake find their lives changed when a magician shows up with a beautiful young assistant in 1968's Capricious Summer (Rozmarné léto). With its lightly ironic humour and contemplative cinematography, this is a movie perfectly suited to a drowsy summer day.

Antonin (Rudolf Hrušínský) presents himself as the owner of the "bathhouse" which really seems to be just a lake with a dilapidated shack. His two friends are the "Major" (Vlastimil Brodsky) and the "Canon" (František Řehák). They drink wine, they swim, they squabble over minor matters. Then a young man appears called Arnostek, played by the film's director, Jiří Menzel, who, with apparently real skill, walks across a pole bridging a length of water between the shore and the shack. He invites the men to a show where the real main attraction turns out to be the magician's assistant, Anna (Jana Preissova).

Antonin immediately sets to work seducing her, heedless of the watchful eyes of his wife. Hrušínský's deadpan performance is delightful. When he brings the young woman back to the shack in secret, he massages her feet, steps back, and flexes his hands. There's a jump cut, dawn breaks, and we find he is still massaging her feet and flexing his hands thoughtfully. He may not know what he plans to do next but his face retains an air of utmost authority.
